UK Welfare Spending by Group

A recent poll showed that a large number of people believed that the unemployed received more than any other group. Here's the true facts:

Unemployed (Jobseekers Allowance / JSA) = £5Billion

Sick & Disabled (ESA & DLA Etc) = £31Billion

Families With Children (Child Benefit, Child Tax Credits Etc) = £37Billion

Low Income Families (Working Tax Credit & Housing Benefit Etc) = £42Billion

Pensioners (Pensions, Heating Allowance Etc) = £85Billion

Now you've seen the stats above which displays the real and true impact of the sensationalist press stories and governmental propaganda has had on public awareness of welfare spending.

No one, least of all myself, is denying that the elderly deserve financial support after paying into the system for a long time, but how long will it be before they too feel the pain of government cuts?

No-one wants to ask this question through fear of being labelled 'against the elderly'.

With a rapidly aging population, sooner or later we will have to ask "how much longer can we afford universal benefits for all older people, despite their wealth?" It's an important question and one we cannot shy away from, even if we don't want to ask it.
